My Writing Manifesto

I have questions.

I write to find answers.

I write to understand.

I agree with Joan Didion who said: “I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means.”

Except

Didion’s conclusion is not the end.

For me, writing entirely for my own understanding is not enough; I also hope to motivate others to seek truth and empowerment for themselves.

Or at least suggest a path where such things might be found.

A path that is revealed when real stories are told and some truth about the human journey is illuminated…when we understand how our heroes got from where they were to where they are…when the challenges that precede triumphs are explained…when pain is acknowledged and happiness remains possible…when we are

Challenged to think.

Allowed to laugh.

Inspired to believe.

Believe that our dreams are worth pursuing, our neighbors are worth saving and the values of peace, equity, respect and justice are worth upholding.

My goal is to ask the right questions and find the right stories to help us learn from each other.
